Warming up with The Edge

The Edge

Lots of crap has been distracting me from this here little blog (most of it just a huge pile of steaming laziness.) So, I’m going to poke my little piggies into the cool water just an inch or two tonight with a Rocky Patel Edge Maduro and a bottle of Spaten Optimator. It has been a while, a long while, since I’ve smoked an Edge. My last one had to be back when they were first released and I was in full blown snob mode turning my nose up at anything what wasn’t high end Fuente or Ashton. I have to admit, I’m still not terribly impressed with the Edge. This cigar has some pep, but it lacks that extra pop I expect from a cigar that brags about strength. Random Musings 8/29/09

randomWelcome to the first of what I hope will be my weekly spewing of random thoughts about cigars and anything else that pops into my empty tin can of a brain. Consider this a clearinghouse of crap that has been bouncing around in my head all week muddying my thoughts, but not deep enough or profound enough to warrant a full article. Joya de Nicaragua Antaño

Antano_LabelMention the Antaño to any seasoned cigar smoker and you will likely receive a knowing grin or a grimace of disgust. Whether the experience was a pleasurable one or a painful one, it was certainly unforgettable because the Antaño from Joya de Nicaragua is one of the more unique and interesting cigars on the market today.

Released in 2002, a time when full-bodied cigars were gaining serious steam Continue reading Joya de Nicaragua Antaño

Cain Double-Toro a Sneaky Killer

Ghent_Cain_AbelWhen Cain set out to murder his brother Abel he doubtless hid his intent before striking the death blow. My experience with the Cain double-toro was much like Abel’s. It was a sneak attack.

I just settled down to enjoy a cigar and I reached for my last Cain sample the double-toro. I left the camera and lightbox behind because I figured what would be the purpose for reviewing the same cigar twice even if it was a different size. Overkill? Without a doubt, but now I feel it is my my duty to warn my cigar brethren of the dangers of turning your back on Cain. Continue reading Cain Double-Toro a Sneaky Killer

CAO To Debut La Traviata at IPCPR

La TriviataCAO always makes a big splash at the annual IPCPR (formerly RTDA) convention and this year will be no different with their release of the La Traviata line of cigars. Billed as a full flavored cigar, La Traviata will be clothed in an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper. Rounding out the blend is a Cameroon binder a filler comprised of both Nicaraguan and Dominican ligero. CAO president Tim Ozenger notes:

“The flavor bombards the palate with intense, rich notes of cedar, anise, and leather, evolving along the way into a lush and creamy finish.”

Packaged in 24-count boxes, CAO La Traviata will be available in three shapes: Divino (5″ x 50), Radiante (6″ x 52), and Intrépido (7″ x 54), and will have a suggested retail price range of $4.95 to $5.75 per cigar.

Oliva Cain Early Review

Cain Sam1

I have been pestering my Oliva buddies ever since I read some of the pre-release material about Cain. The idea of a straight ligero cigar piqued my interest and had me intrigued for weeks now. My pestering paid off with a sample toro and torpedo that I immediately threw in front of a camera before settling down for a nice, relaxing smoke. Continue reading Oliva Cain Early Review

Ernesto Perez Carrillo To Continue Legacy

lagloriaIt’s been barely more than six months since Ernesto reluctantly turned away from the brand that made him a standard in the cigar world: La Gloria Cubana. The opportunity to work with his children was a siren song too powerful to resist and the fruits of their labor is expected to see the light of day this fall. As a fan of the La Gloria Cubana Serie R Maduros, I am very excited to see what Ernesto y familia have been cooking up in their Miami laboratories. NPR
